WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO?
1. CITIES worldwide are becoming increasingly IMPORTANT. They are growing and changing in a rapid speed. Therefore, the urban public space is becoming more crucial in our daily lives. We feel that the quality of PUBLIC SPACE is under pressure.
By demonstrating, with The Flying Grass Carpet, the benefits of a good public space, we want to show the importance of places where people can meet and simply enjoy themselves in the public realm. We hope to inspire city-makers and urban decision makers to create BETTER CITIES for us all.
2. The Flying Grass Carpet likes people to feel how CONNECTED we all are. We have more in common than we sometimes think. By traveling from one location to the next, The Flying Grass Carpet brings a world-wide shared experience. If you sit on The Carpet you enjoy exactly the same design as somebody for example in Rotterdam, Istanbul or Shenzhen.
3. Children need to play and they need to play OUTDOORS. Most cities lack places for children in the urban centre. The Flying Grass Carpet is fun for children as they can invent all sorts of games. They run along the lines in the pattern and hop from colour to colour. The Carpet is soft and cheerful.
We like children to have a good childhood and fun in the city they live in.
4. We simply want urbanites to ENJOY CITY LIFE. To have a picnic, to Frisbee, to read a book while enjoying the sun, to frolic with your dog, to have an outdoor birthday party, to cuddle with each other, to do a handstand and to play tag. All in the middle of town,

The Flying Grass Carpet is a collaboration between two Rotterdam based design studios: HUNC and STUDIO ID EDDY. Both studios are experts in creating innovative designs to improve public spaces. Central to their approach is how people can use a public space. With their approach of place-making and place-testing a public space can be substantially improved.
